As I sit down to write this inaugural blog post, and on Earth Day 2024 no less, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and purpose. Today marks 1 month since the launch of our website, a platform for our business born out of our deep-rooted passion for sustainability and environmental stewardship. It's a journey that has been years in the making, shaped by both personal experiences and professional endeavours. We are a group of dedicated and passionate sustainability consultants based in the vibrant city of Sydney, Australia, and we are committed to helping businesses of all sizes and industries navigate the complex landscape of sustainability.
My journey as a good citizen of Earth began long before I even heard the term "sustainability". Growing up surrounded by the beauty of the tropics, I developed a profound appreciation for the environment and a keen awareness of the interconnectedness of all living things. As a child, I vividly recall kneeling in our front yard planting Rain Lilies with my mother and then eagerly, and patiently, waiting for the delicate pink blooms that usually appeared after the rains a couple of weeks later. However, it wasn't until midway through my early career that I began to grasp the urgency of the environmental challenges we face and the critical role that projects, businesses and individuals must play in addressing them.
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with organisations committed to making a positive impact on the planet. From implementing eco-friendly practices in supply chains to advocating for renewable energy solutions, as well as playing a role in the founding and managing of the Malaysia Green Building Council, I've witnessed first-hand the transformative power of sustainability initiatives and the nation-shaping legacies that they leave behind. Yet, despite the progress being made, it's clear that much work remains to be done.
At the heart of our mission at Pure Environment is the belief that businesses have the power and responsibility to drive positive change in the world. Guided by this conviction, we've dedicated ourselves to helping organisations of all sizes and industries navigate the complex terrain of sustainability and embrace practices that benefit both the planet and their bottom line. We recognise that sustainability is not just a trend or a buzzword; it's a fundamental imperative and a clarion call for the long-term health and well-being of our planet and future generations. To this end, we have set out on a mission to assist and endow businesses with the knowledge and resources they need to embrace sustainability and drive positive change.
Central to our approach is the concept of knowledge sharing. We believe that by sharing insights, best practices, and innovative solutions, we can inspire and energise others to take meaningful action toward a more sustainable future. Through our website, we aim to serve as a gateway to a wealth of resources, insights, and solutions designed to empower businesses on their journey toward sustainability excellence.
In the tapestry of our professional journeys, there are moments that stand out as true milestones – moments that not only validate our dedication and hard work but also reaffirm our commitment to our values and principles. For me, one such moment came when, along with Nick Clarke, I was honoured with the Richard Stanton Award for Excellence in Sustainable Forest Management for our work related to the specification and delivery of 100% responsibly sourced timber using Spotted Gum and Blackbutt Eucalypts on the Sydney Metro Northwest Project’s station canopies and multi-storey carparks. It was the first project of its kind in the to earn responsible timber project certifications (FSC & PEFC) in the world.
As I reflect on the journey that has led me to this moment, I'm reminded of the words of Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
The road ahead may seem long and challenging, but with passion, perseverance, and a shared commitment to sustainability, I'm confident that we can make profound and lasting impacts.
Here's to a future where business and sustainability go hand in hand, and together, we build a world we can be proud to leave behind for future generations.
With gratitude,
Thiru Jallendran
